Ellen Pau: Time After Time Will Tell 

An exhibition of artwork by Hong Kong Media Art pioneer Ellen Pau and archival exhibits from Videotage Media Art Collection (VMAC).

Singapore – 1961 proudly presents its upcoming exhibition Ellen Pau: Time After Time Will Tell, co-organised with Videotage, a leading Hong Kong non-profit organization specializing in the promotion and preservation of new media art. Through the works of Hong Kong media art pioneer Ellen Pau, this is a hybrid exhibition of video installation art and archival materials, exploring cultural and political realities against the magnitude of time.

Curated by Kyle Chung, this exhibition showcases video installation works by Ellen Pau from the late 80s for the first time in Singapore, including projection installation Great Movement (1993-1995, remake 2016) and single-channel video Love in the Time of Cholera (1988). To reflect her art making process as a media artist as well as her important role in media art history, archival exhibits have been selected from Videotage Media Art Collection (VMAC) including historical documents, correspondence, publications, and photo documentation. From a micro perspective, Pau’s use of video as a time-based medium intimately delivers socio-politically infused emotions by manipulating frames and glitches. From a macro perspective, her art, with temporal qualities and its significance in media art history, emphasizes the passage of time, witnessing the ups and downs, and the fools and kings in urban society.

As part of the exhibition programme, 1961 has also organised a panel discussion with the artist Ellen Pau, curator Kyle Chung and curator, and film scholar Dr. Marc Gloede, the talk aims to cover the creative process and the Hong Kong socio-political influence on Pau’s practice in the 80s and 90s, as well as her perspectives on the discourses in Hong Kong media art culture then and now.
